Americans, especially returning soldiers, had bitter feelings toward "hyphenated Americans" because of World War 1. Americans opposed the League of Nations for fear of entering another European conflict, and losing more family members or friends in armed combat.

The number of people who could immigrate was 3% of that country's immigration in 1910. The act set limits on all parts of Europe, and parts of Asia, but set no limit to Latin America.
The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866, and focused mainly on discrimination of African-Americans. In the 1920's the Klan targeted foreigners and intellectuals more, which is where nativism comes into play. By the middle of the decade, the Klan numbers ranged from 3 to 8 million people.
